Houston National Women's Conference, 1977
In 1977, more than 20,000 attendees gathered at the National Women's Conference in Houston. The goal was to formulate a Plan of Action that would improve the lives of American women. A symbol of this conference is the "Torch of Freedom," that hundreds of relay runners carried from the sight of the first women's conference in the U.S. The relay run began in Seneca Falls, New York and was routed through the states to Houston, Texas. The map shows the stops as planned in the tentative NWC torch relay route.
