Ferdinand Magellan set out from Spain in 1519 with a fleet of five ships to discover a western sea route to the Spice Islands, the route he discovered is now known as the Strait of Magellan and he became the first European to cross the Pacific Ocean. Unfortunately, he died on April 27, 1521, in a tribal skirmish on the Mactan Island in the Philipines so without him, his ships returned to Spain on September 6, 1522.
